The AGM PVS-14 Night Vision Monocular is a rugged, lightweight, multi-purpose night vision device that has repeatedly proven itself in combat. The PVS-14 design was originally commissioned by the United States Military to enable nighttime operations. This monocular is used globally in some of the most challenging environments. The PVS-14 can be used as a handheld device, or mounted on the included head harness. With the proper accessories, it can also be mounted to combat helmets, providing night vision capabilities to daytime optical sights. The PVS-14 monocular conforms to 810G Military standards and demonstrates the highest quality form and function. The PVS-14 monocular is a full-featured unit. Weighing less than 12.4 ounces / 350 grams. The unit includes manual gain control, an automatic bright light shut-off feature, and a built-in Infrared (IR) illuminator. The bright light shut-off feature ensures that the high-quality photocathode tube is protected. AGM’s PVS14 includes an array of optional accessories to support virtually any operation.

The least expensive superpower
This is my first night vision so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. That said, in absolute terms, it is amazing. On a moonlit night you can stand in a field and see individual blades of grass. There is some noise, but it comes as very bright instantaneous bursts—I would say single pixel, but that’s not how analog night vision works—so it’s not something you mistake for image. More of just a reminder that you’re seeing in the dark. The lens cap has a tiny pinhole in it so you can use it for short periods of time in higher light settings, though the manual says anything over 10 minutes begins to risk damaging your optic. What amazed me is that with this lens cap on, with the lights off in my house, the optic was STILL strong enough that I could make out objects and furniture well enough to navigate safely. There’s an active IR illuminator I was definitely not using, but I almost wonder if you could take this thing into a deep cave, and see by the tiny IR light your body heat generates. I’m THAT impressed.
The optic comes with a free skullcrusher so you can use it right out of the box, but it’s plastic and I recommend buying a helmet mount or higher quality skullcrusher to wear it. It runs on a single AA battery, which that the manual said was not included, but actually was in my case.
Careful of your smartphone. You’ll flashbang yourself if you use it normally. You should still watch someone use theirs with your NODs on so you understand how much near infrared strobing those things actually do.
