YOU MUST BE REGISTERED FOR MOUNTAIN READINESS’ SPRING EVENT TO ATTEND. SEE THE EMBEDDED LINK.
By request from the hosts of Mountain Readiness – I’ve put together a one day crash course on communications focused on setting up off grid communications for novices and seasoned radio amateurs alike. Topics include:
- Understanding Off-Grid Radio Principles
- License-free radio options & equipment: Where does it all fit?
- Sourcing off-grid power
- Antennas for dummies
This is a very different course from the RTO Courses, designed to create a baseline of skill when conventional communications are disrupted. No equipment aside from a solid attitude, notebook and pen are required. This is NOT a ham radio hobbyist course, this is a one day course on communications. At the conclusion all students will:
- Understand where CB, FRS/GMRS/MURS and Amateur Radio all fit in the survival equation
- Have hands on with equipment setting up a station literally from unboxing to getting it on the air
- Each construct an antenna that is theirs to keep from improvised materials
Equipment will be available for purchase on site.
Size & Fit
- Model is wearing size M and is 6’3»/191cm
- Loose fit for a roomy feel

My Mistake
I left a review a little while ago that was based on my very bad misunderstanding of my order. I ask everyone to please disregard it. I have sent Brushbeater an apology and I apologize to everyone who has read my initial review and formed a poor opinion because of it. I personally know one person who has had training sessions with Brushbeater and is always very satisfied with his training. Again, I’m very sorry for how my initial review sounded. PLEASE, disregard it.

An exceptional day of practical learning
My primary goals when registering for the Survival Communications Crash Course were to learn useable subject material without a huge investment of time and financial resources and to evaluate future utilization of Brushbeater’s goods and services. With his unique blend of deep subject knowledge and practical real world experience, Matt clearly demonstrated that he is an exceptional presenter that improves participants’ skills.
Furthermore, with all that troubles us in our nation and the world, I came away encouraged by not only the full classroom of both males and females but the wide span of ages from what appeared to be pre-teen and teen right on up to us “old codgers.” If you want to learn, don’t pass up an opportunity to do so with NC Scout!

Great Intro to SHTF/WROL Comms
A lot of preppers seems to save comms for last. Why is that? I think it’s because the subject matter is very technical and many preppers have had bad experiences with local ham groups. I know I did. Thankfully, NC Scout’s course is very down to earth without any of the condescension you would find from a ham group. He provided recent real world experiences (Hurricane Helene) as well as his own experiences in using secure comms in Afghanistan. God forbid something like that happens where I live, but if it does, I feel much more confident about using my Baofengs in a SHTF/WROL situation. I actually learned way more about antennas, propagation, etc. in an eight hour class than I EVER learned by being part of a ham group for three months. NC Scout is a very engaging speaker and makes some of the drier stuff very interesting. I also met a lot of like-minded people that have encouraged me to go back and regain my Technician license. I highly recommend this class and will probably take several other Brushbeater classes in the near future.
