The Brushbeater Intro to Land Navigation course (ILN) exists to provide the
prepared patriot with an introduction to the timeless techniques of land navigation. The
introductory nature of the course omits advanced techniques and technological enablers
(covered in later courses). The two days of class are focused on achieving operational
proficiency in basic map and compass skills such as:
● Map reading
● Terrain navigation
● MGRS
● Plotting grids and azimuths
● Point to point navigation
● Night navigation
● Route Planning
The Terminal Learning Objective (TLO) of the course is for students to leave with the
ability to navigate unfamiliar terrain using only a map and compass.
There is no required gear for the course other than the following:
1. Weather appropriate clothing,
2. Good boots
3. Extra wool socks
4. Clear eye protection for night navigation
5. Waterproof notebook and pens/pencils for field use
6. Full water bottle and a way to carry it
7. Watch with stopwatch mode or charged phone with stopwatch app
Pack like you’re preparing for a hike in the rain and you’ll be fine. Expect to walk a
couple miles over two days. Bring long sleeves, gloves, and real eye protection (more
than just small prescription glasses) for night navigation or you will get scratched up.
Recommended Gear (not required and extras provided when available, don’t buy junk)
● Cammenga 3H compass - (Tritium preferred, phosphorescent is alright) Bring
whatever compasses you have currently as well. Your training will suffer if you
don't have a usable night nav compass, if you buy anything for the course make
it this.
● SealLine map case or similar
● Staedtler markers .4mm or similar
● Paracord
● Military style protractor(s) with 1:24000, 1:25000, and 1:50000 scale
● Headlamp with night mode/ red light
● Thick and durable long sleeves for night navigation
● Protective gloves for night navigation
● Small pack/ ruck to carry everything in during field exercises
● Baofeng/radio
● Whistle
● Snacks
● Any gear you want to field test
Class starts at 0900 rain or shine. Camping on site is available and standard, arrive the
night prior if need be.
