This is my pick for a multi-purpose communications solution which can support the Sustainment, Tactical and Clandestine roles as described in The Guerrilla’s Guide to the Baofeng Radio.
The AR-152 shares the functionality, controls and accessories of the much older Baofeng UV-5R and is programmable via Chirp. With 10w maximum output, it can easily serve as the communications platform to connect users over a range of at least 10 miles when utilizing the techniques taught in the RTO Course.
This radio has a far superior build quality to the older Baofeng UV-5R models. It features a larger, easier to read screen and large buttons that are easy to index whether wearing gloves in a tactical environment or in a low light condition. The best quality is the large capacity battery (12,000 mAH) providing an incredibly long life. There is no need for a separate charging cradle as the battery design has a separate plug-in for charging.

I picked this up to complement the UV-5R that I already had. Looking forward to the larger display and buttons as well as the longer battery life.
If you’re going to buy one of these you may as well buy it from the Brushbeater store where you can add the BNC adaptor and gooseneck antenna that Matt recommends. Throw in a couple decals or a field manual and you hit the free shipping mark.
As for shipping, it was blazing fast. My order packed the same day and arrived the next week.

Exactly what I needed
This is a great radio for the price. It’s more durable than my UV-5R and the battery lasts way longer. You can use your UV-5R saved profile from CHIRP too. Cloning a radio takes less than a minute. Keep in mind that the AR-152 isn’t in CHIRP, so you have to select the BF-F8HP.

I love the radio , but somehow I received a charger that dosent even plug into the radio ?? On top of that no K1 wire, which I’ve never heard of ever purchasing a radio without a K1 wire. The gooseneck attena, is nothing what shown in the pictures, it’s a Chinese knock off of a different gooseneck attenta.

I’ve had mine for well over a year. Still working great. I highly recommend getting 2 or more. There are similar radios that are 5xs the price but this one will do the job quite well. Would like to see it in multi cam. However, get the radio pouch for obvious reasons & the gooseneck antenna for improved reception & transmitting.
Plus, don’t forget a backup battery!

The AR-152 is basically a ruggedized UV5R with longer battery life, improved durability, and still compatible with all the same UV5R support equipment. If you can’t afford an ANPRC-152, don’t need encryption, and are ok with the functionality of the UV5R, then the AR-152 is for you! Run in simplex for small teams or duplex for increased range and networking. Too easy!

The booklet that comes with the radio is of some help, however seems to me that you need to already be familiar with these radios for the book to help. It is rather confusing. The larger antenna I purchased does not interchange with the stock antenna. Had the radio two weeks & not much help at this point.

Great Radio with a small issue
The radio has a small issue at this time. Hopefully this issue will be fixed soon. The Radio switches the High power to Low power when connecting to any programming software. For the full 10 watt power you need to use Low power setting after programming the radio. Outside of this issue the radio works great.

I ordered two of these this summer plus Brushbeaters book (ordered through Amazon originally, sorry Brushbeater, wasn’t aware of your store at first). I’m fairly familiar with two ways from my twenty years of coaching. Brushbeater’s book was informative and easy to follow. I had two radios programmed fairly quickly. Recently I handed one to a buddy of mine and we are now communicating with home built antennas over a 20 mile distance in New England. I’ve had the radio out in the rain, no issues. Switched all antenna connections to BNC connectors, which is super efficient for building antennas. Working on setting up the radio I just bought for home scanning and carry the other as part of my get home, EDC kit. I’m very satisfied with the radio. Get the accessories-Molle carrier, on knob gaurd, BNC connectors, and extra batteries (I ordered extra batts with original order). Thumbs up for the AR-152 and Brushbeater. I also ordered a Special Operations Medical Protocols book. My only advice for the book is get a good set of readers to carry with it.
